Senior staff members at New Meadow are not just like family — they are family. Bill and Caroline Canavan created the overnight riding camp at New Meadow Farm in 1992, modeling it after their well-regarded day camp in suburban Philadelphia. Members of their extended family live on the farm and take care of the horses year-round, pitching in during the summer months to staff the camp and manage the farm.

Daughter of a steeplechase jockey, Caroline has spent most of her life teaching children and adults how to ride. Bill supervised construction of New Meadow's barn, main house, bunkhouses and outbuildings. He also coaches campers in competition.

Area professionals and former campers fill out the staff as instructors, counselors and household staff.

And on staff

Coming back for a second year as riding director is Megan Canavan. Megan grew up with horses and began riding at the age of 3 (when she wasn't napping on the back of a pony in her mother's lesson ring.) Megan rides horses, trains horses and has competed on horses at the Virginia Horse Center and at Devon. Even her other car is a horse.

The phone call or email that comes with the right answers to all your camp questions most likely will be from camp director
Jessica Kulp. Kulpie (as we call her) began riding when she was 10 and advanced to compete in hunter-jumper classes in the United States and Portugal, where she lived with her family while in high school. When she returned to Philadelphia to attend college, she began working at Ashford. She is now an instructor and senior staffer at both Ashford and New Meadow farms.
